E-trekking bikes – Conquer the vastness of nature
Endurance and resilience: e-trekking bikes come into play at exactly this point. Powerful electric motors support you on bike tours or longer bike trips with additional power to increase your range.
And together with the extremely robust frame and the expansive luggage racks, e-trekking bikes ensure that you never have to get stuck on inclines again, even when fully loaded. The extra push and condition raise bike trips and tours to a new level.
What makes a trekking pedelec special?
E-trekking bikes are bicycles that are specially designed for driving long distances. They should prove the agility and flexibility of a city bike on the road and at the same time shine with their robustness and reliability on easy terrain.
To achieve this, they combine the robust frame geometry of a racing bike with elements of mountain bike off-road mobility, such as cantilever brakes and suspension forks.
They differ in their basic properties from Dutch bikes, in particular, due to their greater off-road mobility. The main features of an e-trekking bike can be described as follows:
- Very robust frames, hubs, and wheels
- Ability to drive from the street to easy terrain
- Very high load capacity
With a luggage rack, electric motor, and battery, the necessary devices for use in road traffic – such as a lighting system – and the usual comfort components such as mudguards, a trekking pedelec is no longer a lightweight.
However, this disadvantage can easily be compensated for by the additional power of the engine. While you can easily sweat on a typical non-motorized trekking bike on inclines, electro trekking bikes practically carry their own weight.
The be-all and end-all – the driving characteristics
Although e-trekking bikes use the diamond frame shape of a racing bike, the seat and handlebars are positioned to support the upright seat. Even on long journeys, the muscles are relieved and endurance increased.
The high dead weight – with electric trekking bikes usually with a central, low center of gravity on the bottom bracket motor – does the rest to give the bike enormous directional stability and particularly smooth driving characteristics.
Combined with the power of the supporting electric motor, these properties create a particularly comfortable driving experience.
If you opt for a model with a wave frame shape, getting on and off will be particularly comfortable – with this variant, however, the battery is usually not mounted centrally on the frame but on the luggage rack, thus changing the weight distribution.
Typical technology and common materials
To minimize weight while maintaining high torsional rigidity and damage resistance, e-trekking bikes, like most modern bicycle types, are usually manufactured with frames made of high-quality aluminum.
Carbon is usually not an alternative for e-trekking bikes in the private sector, since you hardly benefit from the higher torsional rigidity, while the slightly higher probability of damage with trekking bikes has a negative impact on the important element of robustness and reliability.
Most manufacturers rely on the quality work of the company Bosch in the area of motors and batteries – motors from the Bosch Performance Line are installed worldwide since they have established a reputation for particular performance and reliability in recent years.
Due to their area of application, e-trekking bikes benefit enormously from both properties of Bosch technology, while they are hardly hindered by the disadvantages – such as the limited number of possible gears.
bike art | suspension | robustness | frame shape | Accessories |
---|---|---|---|---|
trekking bike | suspension fork | high (aluminum) | Wave or Diamond | Luggage carrier, road safety elements |
city bike | suspension fork or none | high (aluminum) | Wave or Diamond | Luggage carrier, road safety elements |
cross bike | suspension fork or none | high (aluminum) | diamond | Rarely road safety elements |
What to look out for when buying?
Before buying a trekking pedelec, you should take a look at the range specified by the manufacturer. “Range” here means the average distance that the electric motor can be used before the battery loses its charge.
Keep in mind that the electric motor runs continuously for this calculation – this means that the range can in principle be significantly higher if you only switch on the motor under certain conditions and otherwise pedal yourself.
However, if you want to further increase your range, it is worth purchasing a replacement battery. Although these are not exactly cheap due to the built-in lithium-ion technology, they can easily be carried along as luggage and, if necessary, exchanged in a few simple steps.
The included engine controls may also be worth a look before you buy. The modern Bosch Nyon system, for example, not only operates the electric motor but also has useful additional functions that can be a real asset, especially in the trekking sector, such as:
- Topographic display of the remaining range
- Route planner with 10 programmable stopovers
- 8GB internal memory
Control elements such as the Bosch Nyon are therefore real on-board computers and can potentially make planning bike tours and orientation a lot easier.
Who benefits most from e-trekking bikes?
For friends of long bike trips or family trips, nothing beats e-trekking bikes. If you are traveling with a lot of luggage, you will benefit from the robust bikes with a large luggage rack – and if you want to ride your bike in a relaxed manner, the support motor and seating position will benefit you.
In order to have enough battery even on longer tours, we recommend the e-bike charging station app, which is available for Android & iOS. If there is no tour planned, the bike can easily be used for shopping or commuting to work.
