HARDTAIL OR FULLY?
- A full-suspension mountain bike has clearly understandable advantages off-road.
- Not only is it faster downhill, it’s also faster uphill off-road.
- It “glides” over obstacles; you are not “thrown back” on every rock or branch, but drive over the obstacle with little resistance.
- The advantage of the hardtail is of course its price and weight, especially beginners are right here.
WHAT MOUNTAIN BIKE TYPES ARE THERE?
In addition to the rough distinction between a hardtail and fully, depending on whether full suspension is available or not, there are other MTB types. Depending on the intended use and the terrain in which you want to be on the road, you will find the right mountain bike for you in these categories.
CROSS COUNTRY OR MARATHON BIKES
The purpose of cross country bikes is clearly sporting use up to racing. Performance is paramount, sometimes at the expense of comfort. For optimum energy savings, the bikes are very light (usually less than 13 kg, ambitious athletes ride bikes under 10 kg) and have high-quality components. Recommended terrain is unpaved paths and roads, you should refrain from difficult terrain. Cross country hardtails are the most common, but cross country fullys have now also been designed for racing.
TRAIL BIKES OR ALSO CALLED ALL-MOUNTAIN BIKES
An all-mountain or trail bike is usually a full-suspension mountain bike, i.e. a fully, which is designed for a wide range of uses. This can range from simple tours in flat terrain to crossing the Alps. The weight of the bike is less of a focus, it’s much more about comfort, reliability, and enough travel. The variable chassis of the trail bikes have a suspension travel of 120 to 160 mm. The suspension fork and the damper can often be blocked completely or partially in order to be able to ride uphill better. The weight of the All-Mountain Bikes is around 10 to 14 kg.
DOWNHILL AND FREERIDE BIKES
Downhill and freeride mountain bikes are made for use in difficult, very sloping terrain and are only used downhill. Due to the high loads, they have to be very robust, which results in a high weight. Downhill bikes weigh between 16 and 18 kg. Huge suspension forks with suspension travel between 180 and 250 mm and brake disc diameters of 200 mm are part of the basic equipment. With freeride bikes, you can sometimes jump more than 10 meters high. Integral helmets or full face downhill helmets and protectors are an absolute must for downhill.
ENDURO MOUNTAIN BIKES
Enduro mountain bikes can be classified between all-mountain and downhill bikes. They are much more suitable for touring and not only designed for descents. Nevertheless, they offer enough robustness and spring travel reserves for drops and small jumps. Enduros promise a lot of fun on technical trails, in demanding terrain, and in bike parks.
FAT BIKES
Fat bikes can be recognized from afar by their extra-wide tires. These tires are perfect for surfaces such as snow or sand. The wide tires literally stick to the ground. Some fat bike riders swear by this great traction in demanding riding situations.
DIRT BIKES
Dirt bikes are mountain bikes with small, very maneuverable frames. The suspension fork often only has a very small spring travel or is completely replaced by a rigid fork. There is also no gear shift at all. Their area of application is dirt jumping, a fun sport in which you jump over mounds of earth or kickers. During the jumps, a wide variety of tricks and tricks are performed with the bikes.
HOW MUCH SPRING TRAVEL IS INTENDED FOR WHICH USE?
- Hardtail: suspension fork with 100 mm travel for easy tours and fast courses
- Fully: 120 to 140 mm of travel for longer trips over medium-difficult terrain
- Enduro: 150 to 180 mm travel for rough terrain and mountain excursions
- Downhill bike: 180 to 240 mm suspension travel for laid-out and closed routes
How much DOES A NEW MOUNTAIN BIKE COST?
Of course, the price of a mountain bike depends on the requirements and the components installed. We would like to help you find out what you can expect from the three price ranges: entry-level, middle class, and premium in terms of components and prices.
HOW MUCH DOES AN ENTRY-LEVEL MOUNTAIN BIKE COST?
If you want to venture into the mountain bike world, you should start with a hardtail. Here you can find models from around $700 that are suitable for easy tours on forest roads. Of course, only simple components are used at such a price. You can still expect suspension forks with 100mm travel, stable diamond frames made of aluminum, and disc brakes. Especially the latter is practically mandatory in the field.
For around $1200 you can already get very high-quality entry-level hardtails, which iron effortlessly over one or the other trail and are also suitable for long tours. Good suspension forks, lighter add-on parts, and high-quality rims are already installed in this price range.
Anyone who expects even more from their bike will find entry-level fullys from $1500 which are even better suited for trail use. Here you have to make compromises in terms of the quality of the components. A hardtail around $1000 is therefore recommended for beginners.
THESE PRICES AWAIT YOU FOR A MID-RANGE MTB
If you are looking for a mountain bike for ambitious tours and even one or the other race, you do not have to spend a lot of money. Mid-range MTBs today offer a high level of functionality at a reasonable price. There are excellent hardtails for around $1500, which should make most bikers happy in terms of a suspension fork, attachments, drive (SRAM NX/GX Eagle or Shimano Deore/SLX level), and brakes.
Depending on whether you are looking for an XC hardtail or a trail hardtail, you get 80-100mm or 100-140mm of travel, which will make trail descents a real pleasure. Hydraulic disc brakes ensure the necessary safety. If you move your price limit in the direction of $2000, you usually get a light carbon frame, which means that these hardtails are also suitable for racing.
If you prefer a fully, you have to reckon with around $2500. Here you already get a good chassis that can be fine-tuned to your own needs. Also in terms of attachments, drive, and brakes, acceptable parts are already installed. As a rule, one should not expect only a carbon frame.
THAT’S WHAT PREMIUM MOUNTAIN BIKES COST
Of course, there are no upper limits, but you can get a premium hardtail from around $2500. High-quality suspension forks (depending on the application between 100-140mm travel) are installed here, which mostly come from Fox or Rock Shox.
There are also carbon frames and some carbon add-on parts. Of course, the more you spend, the more carbon you will find on the bike and the lower the weight. If you have high ambitions, you have to dig a little deeper into your pocket. Then there are also SRAM X01 or even XX1 Eagle or Shimano XT and XTR components for the drive. In addition, there are powerful disc brakes, which are also suitable for wild trail use.
A Premium Fully costs around $3500-$5000. Here, too, there is the full range of high-quality chassis, carbon frames, hydraulic disc brakes, and race-ready SRAM and Shimano drives. Of course, the equipment differs in detail, depending on whether you decide on a marathon, trail, enduro, or downhill fully. But at this price, you can be sure that you have the right vehicle for every tour and every trail.
WHAT IS THE RIGHT FRAME SIZE FOR A MOUNTAIN BIKE?
The size of the frame is the most important criterion for a correct fit of the mountain bike. Comfortable and safe driving is only possible with a suitable bike.
Depending on your height and step length, you need a suitable frame size. You can find an MTB frame size calculator here. Of course, our customer service will also help you at support@beatusbikes.com or by phone. In our branches, the sales staff will work with you to find out which frame size is right for you.
WHICH MOUNTAIN BIKE WHEEL SIZE SUITS YOU?
In the medium and high-quality range, the 26-inch wheel size has largely disappeared from the market.
You can find more information about the right wheel size for your new mountain bike in our guide: Which MTB wheel size is the right one?
WHICH CIRCUIT?
Derailleur gears are used on mountain bikes because a large translation range is required. You want to use the lowest possible gears uphill and still be able to pedal on fast descents. If you mainly want to ride tours, you should make sure that the gear ratio has a wide range.
Single cranks are very common in cross country and enduro racing because they save weight and are less subject to wear. Double cranks have prevailed in most segments. They form the best compromise between low weight and sufficient gear range. The triple cranks are still very popular among touring bikers, they offer the widest range of gears.
We have explained which individual circuits are available from Shimano & SRAM for mountain bikes in our mountain bike groupset overview. There you will also find further information on 1-way, 2-way, and 3-way MTB circuits.
WHICH BRAKES CAN BE FOUND ON MOUNTAIN BIKES?
HOW MUCH DOES A MOUNTAIN BIKE WEIGH?
The weight of a mountain bike is of course very dependent on the price and the type. XC/marathon bikes tend to be on the lighter side of the weight ranges mentioned below, while trail bikes tend to be on the heavier side because of the more stable components and the additional suspension travel.
For entry-level hardtails, this usually means a weight of between 27-29 lbs, while fullys in this range weigh between 33-35 lbs. Mid-range hardtails should weigh between 25-27 lbs, fullys 29-33 lbs
Bikers with generous wallets can look forward to premium hardtails weighing less than 25 lbs (many of the bikes even weigh well under 22 lbs), while fullys weigh between 27-31 lbs.
